Abstract: This study employed GIS analysis for flood risk assessment that is considered on social, economic, and environmental factors for flood zones and regeneration areas in a case study of Sheffield in the UK. The GIS layers consist of three components, namely hazard, exposure and vulnerability, whose key variables and coefficients are selected using methods of principal component analysis and geographically weighted regression in GIS tools. Each score of the three components is indicated at 1,2 and 3 corresponding to low, medium and high risks, respectively. Then, the three components are combined to a flood risk map as indices of the flood risk using the GIS overlays. Finally, total indices of the flood risk map are divided into seven levels from 3 to 9. Overall, the study demonstrates the flood risk map which is based on the spatial coincidence of mapping of the three components. Areas with indices 9 on the flood risk map are presented as higher flood risks where there exist in needs of flood defenses the most in the study.
