Application of Fuzzy Theory and Analytic Hierarchy Process on the Environmental Sensitivity Assessment

Abstract:
In recent years, with the rise of rural tourism, hillside rural communities have been heavily developed, causing an increased burden of environmental sustainability. This rural structural change will affect the sustainability of the countryside and destroy the economic benefits or ecological landscape of the countryside. Simultaneously, improper development will result in soil and water conservation safety for the rural areas on hillside land. The Huashan area, located in the hillside of Gukeng Township of Yunlin County and famous for its coffee industry, was chosen as studied area. The environmental sensitivity has increased with the growth of development. In this study, fuzzy theory and analytic hierarchy process coupled with environmental factors extracted by GIS technique was proposed to assess environmental risks. The analysed results indicate that there are 19 sites, accounting for 23.17%, located at high risk area among 82 cafes and hostels. The sites of high risk are mainly distributed around the Hwasan bridge. The vulnerable factors include weaker geological structure and soil, adjacent to riverside and the overused land uses such as roads or construction areas. High risk areas should not be developed, but need more soil and water conservation. The evaluation method proposed in this study can be applied as a reference for hillside rural development.
